Launching a new project

Innovative project on hydroponic coffee gardens in Sweden.

With funding from Swedish organisations Almi and Katec Sörmland, the first step of evaluating the commercial potential of hydroponic coffee growing in Sweden has now launched.

It started as a school project

When Rashma Randeniye studied sustainable business development, one of the school projects was to create a fictitious sustainable business.

Coffee lover and enthusiast Rashma decided to make his school project around his favorite drink. Today the first plants of coffee have been planted in a trial to see if coffee can be grown closer to the consumer.

- For anyone who is interested in coffee it is hardly a surprise that we are now facing a number of challenges with coffee production, sais Rashma. The problem is twofold first there are the challenges that climate change and the environment plays on coffee farms right now. Heat and drought are affecting the plantations resulting in smaller yields and higher prices for the consumers.

The other challenge is of course the effect of coffee itself. Being a globally consumed product, transportation of coffee is a major issue as well as the social sustainability for the coffee farmers.

Hydroponic coffee plantations in the consuming countries might reduce the negative impact of coffee production as well as reducing the dependence of conventionally grown coffee. In the long run this might also mean that land used for conventional coffee production today may be used to grow more sustainable and profitable crops in the future.

Christineholmis located in the rural area of Sörmland, Sweden, owned by Johan and Karin Wachtmeister. They have the ambition to build a business hub on their estate. In 2024 they ran a study that showed their potential to build such a hub. By partnering with Johan and Karin, we were able to find the ultimate premise for our hydroponic coffee growing project.
